Buyer's guide
What should a salon look for in an AI receptionist?
A salon should look for an AI receptionist that answers Instagram DMs as well as calls, books from your service menu and durations, hands color consults to a person, keeps booth renters' calendars and clients separate, takes deposits, nudges regulars before they lapse, and leaves the client list yours. The table turns each into a question for a vendor. The test is a Saturday with your hands in a client's hair.
What are the seven things to check?
Each row is a question for the vendor. The last column is what Foreman does.
| Check | Why it matters | What to ask | Foreman |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hands in a client's hair | You cannot answer the phone or a DM mid-service. | Does it answer calls, texts & Instagram DMs? | Answers calls, texts & Instagram DMs & books from your service menu & durations. |
| Service length & color | The wrong length breaks the day; a new color needs a look first. | Who decides on a color consult or a new service? | Uses your menu & durations. Color consults & anything new go to a person. |
| Chair rental & booth renters | Each stylist's clients are theirs. | Does each stylist have a separate calendar & client list? | Yes. Each stylist's calendar & clients stay separate, set up per stylist on the first call. |
| Deposits & no-shows | A skipped color appointment costs the chair. | Can it take a deposit for long services? | Deposits for color & long services, set by you; no-shows get a rebook offer. |
| Regulars who drift | The 5-week client who becomes 8 weeks becomes gone. | Does it notice & text before they lapse? | Texts regulars when they are due & fills open Saturday chairs. |
| Who owns the client list | A platform that owns your list owns your leverage. | Can you export it, & what happens when you leave? | The list is yours & is exported on exit. No contract, cancel with 30 days notice. |
| Booking platform | Booking in a copy of your book causes double-booking. | Which systems does it read & write? | Vagaro & Boulevard are live connections, along with Google Calendar; the integrations page lists the rest. |
Why do DMs matter more than calls for a salon?
Salon clients are as likely to message on Instagram or text at night as to call, & a studio with one chair of staff cannot watch three inboxes. A phone-only receptionist covers a shrinking share of the inquiries. Ask any vendor to show a booking that starts in a DM & ends in the calendar without you touching it.
What is a missed booking worth?
Small tickets mean the arithmetic needs your numbers. Foreman's salon page uses a median ticket of $77 for a salon and $34 for a barbershop (Zenoti 2026 benchmark, a vendor report) as an editable default, and notes plainly that no independent study ties missed calls to lost salon bookings. At $77 and a 50% chance the caller would have booked, ten missed calls and DMs a week is about $385 a week in appointments, which is worked-example arithmetic and not a promise. The general call pattern is in the 411 Locals field study: 37.8% of calls to small businesses are answered live.
What does it cost?
Foreman is $495 per location per month with no contract. The dated comparison is on AI receptionist pricing. The product page, with an example Saturday, is Foreman for salons & barbers, & the wider group is beauty.
Questions owners ask
What else do salon owners ask about AI receptionists?
What should a salon look for in an AI receptionist?
Look for DM coverage, not only calls; service-menu bookings that respect durations; a person for color consults; separate calendars for booth renters; deposits; a rebook nudge for regulars; and a clear answer on who owns the client list. Then check the bill and the contract.
Can an AI receptionist answer Instagram DMs?
Foreman's salon page lists Instagram DMs among the conversations it handles, alongside calls and texts, and books the appointment in the same thread. Whether another vendor does is a question to ask directly.
Will it book the wrong service or length?
It should use your service menu and durations, and send anything it is unsure about to you. Color consults and new services are the usual hand-offs.
I rent a chair. Can I use it for my own clients?
Yes in Foreman's setup: each stylist has their own calendar and clients, configured per stylist on the first call. Ask any vendor the same, since a shared list is a common problem for booth renters.
What does it cost?
Foreman is $495 per location per month with no contract. The dated comparison with other AI receptionists is on the AI receptionist pricing page.
Where do these numbers come from?
Checked 10/11/2026. Vendor studies are directional, not audited. Where a figure is called an industry estimate, we could not trace it to a primary study. Your own phone log beats every number on this page.
