iMessage, explained for owners
How can a business send iMessages?
A business can text from iMessage in three ways. Apple Messages for Business lets a customer start a chat with your business, through an approved provider and Apple's review. A dedicated iMessage line, run on Apple hardware, lets you message an iPhone customer first. Plain SMS, registered for A2P 10DLC, reaches everyone but shows green. The table compares them; the rest of the page covers pros, cons and what Foreman offers.
What are the three ways a business can text from iMessage?
Same customer, three different experiences. Costs are set by providers & mostly quoted, so the cost column says what is published & what is not.
| Method | Who can start the chat | Setup | Cost | What the customer sees | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Messages for Business | The customer, from a Messages entry point (Maps, search, a tap-to-chat link, a button). | Register with Apple & work through an approved messaging provider; Apple reviews the business. | Set by your provider; usually quoted, not published. | A business chat in the Messages app with your name & logo. | Customer-initiated only. For service & support, not for outbound promotion. Review takes time. |
| A dedicated iMessage line on Apple hardware | You can message first, to a customer who has an iPhone. | A real number tied to Apple hardware & an Apple Account, run for you by a provider. | Provider-priced. Foreman's optional line is $99 a month + $149 activation per location. | A blue bubble from a normal phone number when the customer is on iPhone; a text message when not. | Depends on the customer having an iPhone & on how the provider runs the line. Ask what happens if Apple changes its rules. |
| Plain SMS with A2P 10DLC | You can message first, to anyone with a mobile number. | Register a Brand & a Campaign with carriers through your messaging provider; opt-in & opt-out rules apply. | Carrier registration fees + per-message fees, set by your provider. Foreman's plans include texts per location. | A green bubble on iPhone, a text message on Android. | Unregistered traffic is filtered & fined by carriers. No blue bubble, no typing indicator. |
What is Apple Messages for Business, & who is it for?
It is Apple's own program for business chat inside the Messages app. The customer starts the conversation from a place Apple supports, such as a Maps listing or a tap-to-chat link, and the business replies through a messaging provider Apple has approved, after Apple reviews the business. It suits support and service for a business with a steady flow of inbound conversations. It is not a way to send promotions or to reach a customer first. Apple sets and changes the rules, so read the current terms at Apple Business Register before you apply.
What is a dedicated iMessage line, & what are the trade-offs?
A provider gives you a normal phone number backed by real Apple hardware and an Apple Account, so messages to iPhone users go as iMessage and the rest fall back to SMS. The upside is that you can message first and the customer sees a blue bubble from a number they can save. The trade-offs are that it only works as iMessage for customers on iPhone, it depends on how the provider runs the hardware, and it sits outside Apple's business program. Ask any provider, including us, how the line is set up and what happens if Apple changes its rules.
Do I still need SMS & A2P 10DLC registration?
Yes, as the fallback. Android customers and iPhones without iMessage get a text message, and carriers require businesses that send application-generated SMS over 10-digit local numbers to register a Brand and a Campaign, with clear opt-in, opt-out and help language. Unregistered traffic is filtered harder and carries extra carrier fees (Twilio documents this). Registration is done through your messaging provider. Foreman's SMS terms describe consent & STOP handling.
What will customers see: blue or green?
Blue when the conversation is iMessage between two Apple devices, green when it falls back to SMS. A business cannot promise blue to every customer: it depends on the customer's phone & settings, & no provider controls that. Plan for a mix, & make sure the message reads the same either way.
What does Foreman offer?
Foreman's optional iMessage line is a dedicated number that shows as blue on iPhones. It is $99 a month per location with a one-time $149 activation, on top of a plan from $495. SMS is used when a customer is not on iPhone. It is not Apple Messages for Business. See pricing for the current terms.
Questions owners ask
What else do owners ask about iMessage for business?
How can a business send iMessages?
Three ways. Apple Messages for Business, where the customer starts the conversation and the business works through an approved provider and Apple's review. A dedicated iMessage line run on Apple hardware by a provider. Or plain SMS, registered with carriers under A2P 10DLC. Only the first two can show as iMessage.
Can a business text first on iMessage?
Not through Apple Messages for Business, which is customer-initiated. A dedicated iMessage line can message a customer first, but only an iPhone customer sees it as iMessage; everyone else gets a text message.
What is the difference between a blue and a green bubble?
Blue means the message was sent as iMessage between Apple devices. Green means it went as SMS or MMS, which is what Android phones and iPhones without iMessage receive. Which one a customer sees depends on their phone and settings, not only on what the business chose.
Do I have to register for A2P 10DLC?
If you send SMS from a 10-digit local number through an application, carriers expect you to register a Brand and a Campaign, and unregistered traffic gets more filtering and extra carrier fees (Twilio documents this). Toll-free numbers and short codes follow different rules. Your provider walks you through it.
Is Foreman's iMessage line Apple Messages for Business?
No. It is a separate, optional line: a dedicated number that shows as blue on iPhones, $99 a month per location plus a one-time $149 activation. When a customer is not on iPhone, Foreman uses SMS.
What does it cost to text customers from iMessage?
Apple Messages for Business and third-party iMessage lines are mostly priced by quote, so no market range is published here. Foreman's optional iMessage line is $99 a month plus $149 activation per location, on top of a plan from $495.
Where do these numbers come from?
- Apple Business Register, Messages for Business: lets customers chat with a business through the Messages app. Program rules, approved providers & review steps are set by Apple & change; read them there before you apply.
- Twilio, Programmable Messaging & A2P 10DLC: anyone sending application-to-person SMS over a 10-digit local number in the US must register a Brand & a Campaign; unregistered traffic gets more carrier filtering & extra carrier fees.
